Prabhakar Kulal wins “Life on Streets” Photo Contest; Joe Gonsalves, Charmadi Hasanabba feted

The Life on Streets photo contest conducted by Karnataka Today’s popular online sibling www.Newskarnataka.com over forty-five days from July 4th to August 15th, reached its climax on August 20th, one day after the World Photography day, at the celebrated City Centre Mall in Mangaluru.

Prabhakar Kulal, a 30 year veteran in the field of photography, was declared the winner of the 45 day competition which saw over 300 entries from across the country, for his beautiful click with the title, "You have two hands. One to help yourself, the second to help others". He received a cash prize of Rs 10,00.00 and a trophy. With overwhelming joy he said, “I travel during my free time. I clicked the picture on one of those occasions at Bijapur. I have won a couple of awards earlier for photography including an award from UNICEF”.

Neilesh Jeevan won the Facebook Popular Choice award for his photograph. His picture garnered more than 1,300 likes for which he walked away with a cash prize of Rs 5000.00 and a trophy. Five other consolation prizes of Rs: 2000.00 each were also given away.

The much acclaimed jury - veteran photographer Yajna Acharya, Orthodontist and artist Dr Akhter Husain and renowned photographer Kishan Rao had a tough time deciding the winners. Dr Akhter Husain, member of the jury, who addressed the gathering said that it was easy to learn photography. “With advanced technology and affordable cameras, everyone can and must learn photography”.

Joe Gonsalves, the 95-year-old traffic warden from Mangaluru and Charmadi Hasanabba, who is popularly known as the ‘one-man ambulance’ were felicitated for their contributions to the society by the Chief Guest CEO of Dakshina Kannada Zilla Panchayat, Sri Vidya.

The Bindaas Huduga of Mangaluru, RJ Anurag of Red FM compered the event in his usual inimitable style. Talented beat boxers Swaroop and Akshay rocked the gathering and a brilliant dance performance by D-Zone Dance academy kept the mall audience on their toes. Staff correspondent Alfred Pais delivered the vote of thanks.
